Department of Haematology and Immunehaematology
The department is responsible for design and teach up to date curriculum in the area of Haemtology, Haemato-oncology, Transfusion Medicine and coagulopathies. The overall aim of the department is to supply the market with highly qualified scientists and researchers who able to conduct and interpret laboratory investigations.
What will we do?
As a healthcare scientists in haematology, we will study blood samples to identify any abnormalities. Accuracy in our work is vital as lives depend on our skills. We will report on our findings to help doctors diagnose and effectively manage conditions. First, we will screen the blood to determine if there are abnormalities of the blood cells. Then, depending on the results, we might need to analyse specifics. For example, if the initial test confirmed a patient had anaemia then we would need to confirm the type and cause of the anaemia, or if the screening revealed leukaemia we would need to pinpoint which type of blood cell is abnormal. Our test results will help doctors select and target treatment.
2- Rationale:
a) Shortage of qualified staff for Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS teaching particularly after the steady increase in the number of students in the various colleges in the country.
b) The need for qualified personnel who are able to perform advanced medical laboratory procedures in hospitals and research centers.
3- Objectives:
3.1. General objectives:
Training of a critical mass of medical laboratory scientists to meet the demand for teaching staff in academic institutions and help improve services in hospitals and other service facilities.
3.2. Specific objectives of the course
By the end of the course the student should be able to:
- Have knowledge to conduct advanced haematological tests for diagnosis of blood disorders.
- Run advanced coagulation tests to diagnose haemostatic disorders.
- Perform all the serological tests necessary to provide safe blood and blood products.
- Perform blood fractionation.
- Transfer his knowledge to his juniors.
- Upgrade his knowledge continuously
- Manage laboratory efficiently.
- Construct & evaluate the research projects.
Head Department Message
I would like to welcome you to our Haematology department. My message to current and prospective students is that we are committed to providing a curriculum that will meet your degree requirements while also inspiring you to seek study or career opportunities in Haematology. Since COVID 19 become pandemic, our faculty, lab coordinators, staff, and graduate students have worked tirelessly to design and execute a strategy to open our department while minimizing the chance of viral transmission. Our faculty and lab coordinators are working hard to redesign labs and courses for online.
Before getting in depth let me introduce our delegated staff. Our department consist of 5 Assistant professors, 9 lecturers, 1Teaching assistant, 2 lab technologists and 2 Lab assistants. Our staff have a standard quality with prestigious qualification from different international and national institutes. Our research interests are broad and continue to evolve, covering: Anaemia’s, Haematological malignancies, coagulopathies and transfusion medicine. Our Department offers undergraduate degrees in Hematology, beside exciting graduate studies program through the MSc by course, MSc by research and individual PhD programs. Our Department is closely connected to hospital through in service training programs including Suba Hospital and Military Hospital.
